Submissions to the National Medicines Policy Review strongly favour adjusting the definition of "medicine" by expanding it to include new technologies, but there is contention over how far that definition should be expanded and what should be included.
Most pharmaceutical companies which made a submission to the Review specifically backed the submission of Medicines Australia, arguing that scientific advances over the past few decades means that the definition of medicines should be expanded to include "all chemical or biological therapies, designed to be introduced or applied to the human body to achieve a therapeutic effect".
