Decades of government policy 'drift' in developing the pharmaceutical, biotech and medical devices industries has "come home to roost" with Australia lagging internationally, the Zimmerman inquiry into the approval of new drugs and medical technologies has been told.
The pressures and problems currently facing the industry were predicted in a Productivity Commission report published 16 years ago, with little progress since, former Medicines Australia chief executive and principal of Shawview Consulting, Dr Brendan Shaw said in his submission.
