A gentlemen's club with a difference has been uncovered by a new study which discovered men outnumber women two-to-one as invited lecturers, panelists and planning committee organisers at most academic medical conferences - and more than a third of panels, dubbed 'manels', are men only.
Co-authored by University of Melbourne Professor Nancy Baxter and published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), the study examined 23,440 speakers and 8,535 sessions at 98 global medical conferences.
