Diabetes drug cuts brain risk

Australian researchers have discovered a new use for common type 2 diabetes drug metformin in cognitive health saying it could potentially be used more broadly to reduce the risk of dementia.

A six-year observational study led by the Garvan Institute of Medical Research found Australians aged 70 to 90 years old with type 2 diabetes who were prescribed with metformin experience slower cognitive decline with lower dementia rates than those who did not use the drug.
